A truly significant discovery, Walt Whitman’s Manly Health and Training is an entertaining health manifesto that sheds new light on one of America’s major nineteenth-century authors. 

In the fall of 1858, a thirteen-part essay series appeared in the New York Atlas, under the title Manly Health and Training. This nearly 47,000-word journalistic effort, written by Walt Whitman under his pen name “Mose Velsor,” was lost for more than 150 years, buried in just a handful of library archives, until its recent unexpected discovery.

A truly illuminating discovery that reveals much about a little-known period in Whitman’s life, this men’s guide features earnest recommendations for eating, sleeping, and exercise, emphasizing moderation and focusing on the holistic relationship between the mind and the body.

Manly Health and Training provides essential insight into one of the world’s most beloved poets and his philosophy on manhood, bodily perfectibility, and the future of the American body politic.

This cover is obviously based on Saville's work for Joy Division, particularly the masterful album that bears the same name as this memoir by one of the band's founding members.

My role here was creating a package worthy of this seminal band—and worthy of Saville—while staying true to the visual language he created for Joy Division.

It was obvious to all involved that the iconic pulsar image from the original album should probably be on the book as well. The challenge was to stay true to the stark minimalism of the original album cover (no copy whatsoever) while also satisfying requests for a slightly more commercial package (having actual copy on there . . . perhaps an image of the band etc.). I also wanted it to be slightly broader than just Unknown Pleasures as the book goes beyond that one album. There is also Closer, the second album.

The solution became an all black case cover with no copy, only the pulsar image, and a white overlaying "half-jacket" with both typography and a stark B&W image of the band in style of the Closer album design. A marriage of the only two full-length studio albums before Curtis's death. The photograph is by longtime Joy Division collaborator Anton Corbijn. The edges of the book are stained black.

ALTERNATE OPTIONS
The first image show the cover the way it finally printed. The following images show how it should have printed in my opinion—closer to Saville's original album cover, however some last minute change requests (for reasons I’m not going to get into here) led to a slight variation of the pulsar image.

Upon arrival in San Francisco it’s homeless population is among the very first things you notice. Every day, every hour, every city block—it stares you in the eye. With the second highest homeless-rate in the nation, homelessness has become one of San Francisco’s most difficult social challenges. In a city like this, where one is faced with hundreds of homeless individuals daily, even the most compassionate of us are bound to become somewhat indifferent towards the matter sooner or later. It is not a sign of human cruelty, rather a result of ordinary citizens not knowing what to do about it, beyond putting a few dollars in the cup to salve our consciences. It is also a result of a problem becoming invisible when seen long enough.

The City’s policy on homelessness so far has been to hide the problem, rather than solving it. Regardless of the Mayoral administration, the police are ultimately called in to criminalize homelessness by taking law enforcement action against people for their mere presence in public. Beyond citing homeless people for doing things like sleeping, eating and sitting in public, the SFPD has furthermore created specialized units that work to continuously confiscate and destroy homeless people’s personal property. All in all the governments actions can be summed up as an immense waste of resources, the most astonishing example being former mayor Jordan’s attempt to use heat-seeking helicopters to locate homeless campsites in Golden Gate Park.

The city has failed to understand that homelessness is a consequence of real problems, rather than being the real problem. It is my belief that as long as ordinary citizens continue to shut their eyes on homelessness, the government will continue to hide it rather than addressing the real problems; the lack of affordable housing and living wage jobs—the root sources of homelessness.

The purpose of my campaign was to educate the public about the homeless issue. While every San Franciscan is painfully aware of the size of the problem, few know its reasons and its possible solutions.
